we gotta talk about set it up

there are so many good parts of this movie that people are talking about: the bosses not ending up together, the entire plot line that harper and kirsten work for a sports paper and actually genuinely like sports -> “guys don’t like girls who like sports…guys like girls who like guys who like sports”, them not getting together until the end when they were really single, pete davidson throwing his drink at rick, charlie having a gay roommate and being totally chill about it, harper being happy for her best friend, mike? the best friends fiancé just being so caring to both of them he genuinely wanted harper to like him too and have her blessing or whatever and that was very sweet, her best friend just knowing her so well and letting her go get pizza with charlie even tho she definitely ordered pizza just for harper

i wanna talk about the good parts of this movie that i haven’t seen people talking about: lucy lui set them up in the end because no matter how much of a badass she is she still loves love amen, harper standing up for herself as not being an assistant anymore, charlie still giving rick the file on his ex wife even though he could’ve just said bye and slammed the door, charlies roommate playing third eye blind as a signal that he’s hooking up with someone that’s so real lmao, charlie realizing his girlfriend didn’t really care about him and vice versa, harper getting ghosted because we’ve all been there, kirsten leaving rick because he didn’t know her and really see her because charlie helped her see that but charlie didn’t say hey rick was having phone sex and he didn’t bring that up in the middle of the airport, and i wanna emphasize this last one okay.. harper calls charlie out for lacking character when it counted and he agreed. as far as we know, harper doesn’t know that charlie when to the airport and called rick out about not really caring about kirsten which ultimately stopped her from going with him. charlie agreed he lacked character when it counted and he didn’t tell her that he went back at just the right time. he didn’t try to prove himself and he didn’t try to make harper see that he had character. he admitted his fault and owned up to it and that was just really powerful to me okay

and then there is, of course, the part that will honestly stick with all of us: “you like because; you love despite”

I started this thing over a year ago, but it wasn’t working out so I stopped and was like I can always get back to it later, knowing that that would probably not happen lol. I still had the unfinished piece in my drafts, so every time I went to drafts it was there glaring at me. And now I finally finished it because the shipweeks gave me a reason to pick it back up :p I finished most of the line-art last time, but I had to redraw a lot because it’s been over a year and I’ve improved since then, and obviously something wasn’t working out before. That I was able to make it work this time means I actually learned things last year, which feels good :)
Anyway! Today’s shipweek theme was ‘lights’ and this thing accidentally fits because of the lyrics, so I waited till today to post it.
